Dry sludge

Look at sending your waste to a smelter who recovers metals from dried sludge. Separate wastewater treatments may be needed for metal separation. 

A titanium-containing sludge from a nitric acid bath was separated, before completely dry it exploded, killing a workman. Investigation showed the dry sludge to be a powerful explosive sensitive to heat, friction and impact, composed of about 60 40 silver nitrate titanium.

The SGS locates, analyzes, and removes gamma-ray-emitting radionnclides from soil, sand, dry sludge, or any host matrix that can be transported by conveyor belts. 

A sample of dried sludge of a municipal sewage treatment plant, which had been sealed in glass for exhibition purposes in 1933, was analyzed (23). It showed a broad range of PCDDs remarkably similar to that of more recent material.

The main inputs and outputs of land spreading are shown in Fig. 11.6. Inputs are related to the sludge itself, the additional resources such as petrol for transportation and application and room for storage. The main outputs are the yield improvement and fertiliser substitution. In addition, the emission of pollutants to soil, and indirect emissions to air and water. Other emissions to air are exhaust gases from transportation and application vehicles. Dried sludge may also be emitted to the air during transportation when trucks are not covered.
