Drum barkers

The logs are debarkedy usually in drum barkers, to produce pulp free of bark and dirt. The bark is removed from the logs by friction caused by the rotating drum. Water may be added but, other than that, no chemicals are used in debarking. The removed bark is nowadays usually burnt in specific boilers to yield thermal energy. [Pg.1033]
