In the SANS technique, the fact that different isotopes of the same element can have very different scattering length density is exploited. In the case of hydrogen, the value is negative, while deuterium has a positive value. This make it possible to vary the contrast so that the oil at the inside of the droplets and the water at the outside have the same contrast by using combination of deuterated oils and mixtures of H2O and D2O. What is really detected in the experiment is then the scattering of the surfactant film. Both a contrast where the oil and the water was matched [116] as well as a contrast-variation SANS study with ten different H2O/D2O ratios have been performed [115].
