Downstream processing rate model

There is an interior optimum. For this particular numerical example, it occurs when 40% of the reactor volume is in the initial CSTR and 60% is in the downstream PFR. The model reaction is chemically unrealistic but illustrates behavior that can arise with real reactions. An excellent process for the bulk polymerization of styrene consists of a CSTR followed by a tubular post-reactor. The model reaction also demonstrates a phenomenon known as washout which is important in continuous cell culture. If kt is too small, a steady-state reaction cannot be sustained even with initial spiking of component B. A continuous fermentation process will have a maximum flow rate beyond which the initial inoculum of cells will be washed out of the system. At lower flow rates, the cells reproduce fast enough to achieve and hold a steady state. [Pg.137]

In terms of downstream processes, the flow-rates, compositions, and so on, dictate the size and number of each unit operation for example, while a batch distillation may be used to separate a single feed into a number of different product streams, a continuous distillation train would in general require N columns for N different product streams. The fact that a high degree of modeling is used in the design of each MPI, results in the generally held belief that continuous processes... [Pg.315]

The chemical reactor has a determinant role on both the material balance and the structure of the whole flowsheet. It is important to stress that the downstream levels in the Hierarchical Approach, as the separation system and heat integration, depend entirely on the composition of the reactor exit stream. However, a comprehensive kinetic model of the reaction network is hardly available at an early conceptual stage. To overcome this shortcoming, in a first attempt we may neglect the interaction between the reactor and the rest of the process, and use an analysis based on stoichiometry. A reliable quantitative relationship between the input and the output molar flow rates of components would be sufficient. This information is usually available from laboratory studies on chemistry. Kinetics requires much more effort, which may be justified only after proving that the process is feasible. Note that the detailed description of stoichiometry, taking into account the formation of sub-products and impurities is not a trivial task. The effort is necessary, because otherwise the separation system will be largely underestimated. [Pg.251]
