Down syndrome facial features

A 2-year-old boy in whom Down syndrome was diagnosed when he was an infant comes in for a check-up. Although he is developmentally delayed indicating potential mental retardation, he is exhibiting some clinical features that are inconsistent with Down syndrome. These features include coarse facial features, small stature, radiographic evidence of kyphoscoliosis, widening of the ribs, and malformed vertebrae. 

The inherited disorder Down syndrome (also called mongolism) involves mental retardation and distinctive facial features. It results from the inclusion of an extra chromosome 21 in each somatic cell of the body. Hence, the condition is called trisomy 21.
