Dopaminergic drags

In medical practice, four types of dopaminergic drags are used, and they can be characterized as dopamine precursors (levodopa), dopamine-releasing drugs (amantadine), dopamine receptor agonists (bromocriptine), and dopamine inactivation inhibitors (selegiline). 

Repeated intermittent exposure to stimulants can produce sensitization, where subsequent drag exposures produce increased behavioral and neurochemical responses. The ability of the drag and ultimately of related stimuli to elicit behavior may be increased with repeated administration or intake of the drag. Another important question to be addressed in these mice is how the drags that have a dopaminergic component as a part of their action could manifest their effects under conditions of a persistently elevated DA tone. For example, morphine was able to further elevate extracellular DA levels in the nucleus accumbens and induce enhanced reward in CPP test, but failed to increase locomotor activity in DAT-KO mice (75). In addition, whereas morphine-induced analgesia was unaffected in mutant mice, the behavioral manifestations of naloxone-induced withdrawal were blunted (75).
