Doisy, Edward Adelbert (1893-1986) American Biochemist Edward Adelbert Doisy was born at Hume, Illinois, on November 3, 1893, to Edward Perez and his wife Ada (nee Alley). Doisy was educated at the University of Illinois, receiving a B.A. degree in 1914 and a M.S. degree in 1916. He received a Ph.D. in 1920 from Harvard University. [Pg.83]

In 1934, Edward A. Doisy of Washington University extracted 3(XX) lb of hog ovaries to isolate a few milligrams of pure estradiol, a potent female hormone. Doisy burned 5.00 mg of this precious sample in oxygen and found that 14.54 mg of Cp2 and 3.97 mg of H2O were generated. [Pg.38]

The first sex hormone to be isolated was an estrogen, estrone. Working independently, Adolf Butenandt (in Germany at the University of Gottingen) and Edward Doisy (in the United States at St. Louis University) isolated estrone from the urine of pregnant women. They published their discoveries in 1929. Later, Doisy was able to isolate the much more potent estrogen, estradiol. In this research Doisy had to extract 4 tons of sow ovaries in order to obtain just 12 mg of estradiol. Estradiol, it turns out, is the true female sex hormone, and estrone is a metabolized form of estradiol that is excreted. [Pg.1044]
