Divide and rule

In chapter 1.3 a number of examples of elaborations have already been given, mostly using lattice statistics. All of them Involve a "divide and rule" strategy, in that the system (i.e. the adsorbate) is subdivided into subsystems for which subsystem-partition functions can be formulated on the basis of an elementary physical model. For instance, in lattice theories of adsorption one adsorbed atom or molecule on a lattice site on the surface may be such a subsystem. In the simplest case the energy levels, occurring in the subsystem-partition function consist of a potential energy of attraction and a vibrational contribution, the latter of which can be directly obtained quantum mechanically. Having... [Pg.37]

Another example which makes even more effective use of color and lines on a map is entitled Tndia Divide and Rule. Unrest and friction within India are emphasized by showing the various minor divisions in sharply contrasting colors such as black, orange, green, yellow, and red. The adjacent parts of Asia are uniformly light gray, giving an impression of relative peace and tranquility beyond the boundaries of British domination. Furthermore, broken, barbed lines are used to focus more attention on the internal... [Pg.100]

Tyranny of this kind was necessarily limited to a small area and therefore in all cases was short-lived. The people soon shook off the yoke which force alone had imposed and which even public approval would have been powerless to maintain. The monster, tyranny, was seen at too close quarters not to inspire more loathing than fear and force cannot, like opinion, endure for long unless the tyrant extends his empire far enough afield to hide from the people, whom he divides and rules, the secret of his power and his weakness. [Pg.68]

This effect was compoiinded by the later commercial exploitation of the Mods and Rockers division. The apotheosis of the Divide and Rule theme was the suggestion that the problem could be solved by letting the two groups fight it out in a park or sports field. [Pg.58]

SOLUTION To get one mole of CO on the right side, reverse equation (2) and divide the coefficients by 2. Applying rule 1 and rule 2 in succession,... [Pg.208]

Dipole moments. The differences between the two systems arc such that there appears to be no simple correlation. Nevertheless, since most SI tables will probably list values as coefficients of I0 M the following mnemonic and rule of thumb should help To gel SI values from Debyes, divide by 03. [Pg.497]

Compare this with Hermes "Take the flying volatile and drown it flying, and divide and separate it from its rust, which yet holds it in death draw it forth and repel it from itself, that it may live and answer thee, not by flying away into the regions above, but by truly forbearing to fly. For if thou share deliver it out of its straitness, after this imprisonment, and in the days known to thee shalt by reason have ruled it, then will it become a suitable companion unto thee, and by it wilt thou become to be a conquering lord, with it adorned."... [Pg.28]

In applying either the Description Rule of Section 6.7 or the enumeration algorithm of Section 6.6 to complex multistage separators that have auxiliary heat exchangers, boilers, stream mixers, stream dividers, and so on, a considerable amount of physical insight is required to develop a feasible list of design variables. This can best be illustrated by a few examples. [Pg.518]

Ans. When exponential numbers are divided, the coefficients are divided and the exponents are subtracted. Here again, we will illustrate this rule with a simplified calculation. First, remember that 0.01 in exponential form is 1 X 10. Writing 0.01 in fractional form ... [Pg.16]

The commentary can be divided into two main parts. The first part (chapters 2-6, 10, and portions of chapters 19 and 20) deals with the principles of alchemy and with the ritual aspects of its practice, such as the transmission of the texts, the entrance into sacred space and time, and various precepts and rules. The second part (chapters 7-9, 11-18, and the remaining portions of chapters 19 and 20) is concerned with the compounding of elixirs and with descriptions of their ingredients. The main sources are Ge... [Pg.62]

Dividers and trammels are both set in conjunction with a steel rule by placing one point in a convenient graduation line and adjusting the other to coincide with the graduation line the correct distance away. [Pg.51]

Laws and rules must be enforced if they are to be effective. The system of control under the Health and Safety at Work Act comes from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) which is charged with enforcing the law. The HSE is divided into a number of specialist inspectorates or sections which operate from local offices throughout the United Kingdom. From the local offices the inspectors visit individual places of work. [Pg.3]
