As can be seen in Figure 3, an increase in the viscosity of the system is typically observed after initiation, as hi molecular wei t solution polymer is formed. The viscosity of the system then drops as a dispersion is formed, and the conversion to polymer is finished as a much lower viscosity heterogeneous system. It is not unusual for the viscosity of these polymerizations to increase sli tly during this period, although, with file addition of more salt after the polymerization, the final product will oftentimes have a viscosity of only a few hundred centipoise.
