Dinitrogen complexes are molecules that contain dinitrogen bound to a metal. The first dinitrogen complex, [Ru(N2) (NH ) ], was reported in 1965 as a product of the interaction of hydrazine and RuCl (aq) (18). There are hundreds of complexes in the 1990s with dinitrogen as a ligand (19,20). 

This structure should be contrasted with an alternative formulation of this species as a complex containing one linear and one bent nitrosyl which is suggested in (110) for the Ru analog. The dinitrogen dioxide ligand differs... 

It appears appropriate to include complexes with arenediazonium ions as ligands in the present volume and not in that on aromatic diazo chemistry because here these complexes can be discussed in the context of the corresponding aliphatic compounds (Sect. 10.3) and of the addition products of dinitrogen-to-metal complexes (Sect. 3.3). 

Until today, it is a general rule that 1 1 adducts of diazoalkanes with transition metals are unstable in most cases. The stability can be significantly increased if dibenzoyldiazomethane is used as ligand. This was demonstrated by Cowie et al. (1986 a) in the synthesis of iridium complexes.
