4-Dimethylaminobenzophenone

Dinitro-4,4 -dichlorobenzophenone was used for the preparation of 3,3 -dmitro-4,4 -bis(dnne thylamino[benzophenone. The latter was reduced using catalytic Pd/C and Pd/AhO, to give 3,3 -diamino-4,4 -dimethylaminobenzophenone [25] (Scheme 2.10). 

In the case of radiation-curable (e.g., UV) adhesives, TLC represents a very useful screening test for the presence of several characteristic photo-initiators, e.g., benzophenone, 2,2 -diethoxyacetophenone, 1-benzoyl-cyclohexanol, and 4,4 -dimethylaminobenzophenone (Michler s ketone). 

Auramine O (4,4 -bis-dimethylaminobenzophenone imine hydrochloride) [2465-27-2] M 321.9, pK 10,71 (free base), 9.78 (carbinolamine). Crystd from EtOH as hydrochloride, very slightly soluble in CHCI3, UV 434 (370) nm. The free base has m 136 after crystn from benzene. [J Chem Soc 1724 1949 Biochemistry 9 1540 1970].
