Anhydrous ZnClg added to a slurry of naphthalic anhydride and diethyl malonate, stirred and heated during 3 hrs. to 145-155°, kept 6 hrs. at this temp, with distillation of the resulting alcohol, stirring discontinued, and heated 1-2 hrs. at 170-175° until the mixture solidifies completely 3-hydroxy-1-oxophenalene.
