Materials. PS (M = 4000 g/mol PDI = 1.06) was sulfonated in 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) to levels of 2.5 and 4.8 mol% (corresponding to 1 and 2 sulfonate groups/chain) with acetyl sulfate. Acetyl sulfate was prepared by slowly adding concentrated sulfuric acid to a solution of acetic anhydride in DCBt 0 TlC. This was added to a solution of PS in DCE at -SOTC, and the reaction was terminated after 1 h by the addition of 2-propanol. The SPS (sulfonic acid form) was isolated by steam distillation, washed with boiling water 3 times, dried at TOTlC for 1 day, and then dried at 120TfC in the vacuum oven for one week. The SPS was then re-dissolved in a 90/10 (v/v) mixture of toluene/methanol and neutralized... [Pg.2877]
