These polymers show lower water uptake than the analogous sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) materials, possibly suggesting some interaction between the aromatic nitrile and sulfonic acid. The phosphine oxide functional moiety could also be used as a compatibilizer with other materials. Sulfonated poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide sulfone) terpoly-mers have been prepared both with sulfonated triphenyl phosphine oxide and with triphenyl phosphine oxide with 3,3 -disulfonate-4,4 —dichlorodiphenyl sulfone as the sulfonic acid bearing monomer. Block copolymers containing phosphine oxide appear to avoid the ether—ether interchange that results when non—phosphine oxide blocks are utilized, and this is being further pursued. ... [Pg.358]

Compounds with a high oxidation state such as those with a lot of chlorine are recalcitrant to further oxidation. These compounds must therefore be degraded anaerobically. Chlorine is substituted by hydrogen or HC1 is removed and a double bond is introduced, for example, DDT that may be dechlorinated to 4,4 -dichlorodiphenyl-dichloroethane (DDD) by anaerobic processes or slowly converted to 4,4 -dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) (Stenersen, 1965). Compounds such as mirex and hexachlorobenzene are extremely recalcitrant to degradation, and microorganisms do not attack the highly fluorinated or chlorinated polymers, such as Teflon and PVC. [Pg.169]

Ruorinated PAES copolymers have been prepared by the copolymerization of 4,4 -bis(4 -fluoro-3 -trifluoromethyl benzyl) biphenyl, 3, 3 -disulfonate-4,4 -dichlorodiphenyl sulfone, and 4,4 -isopropylidene diphenol [135], The degree of sulfonation of the copolymers can be controlled by the variation of ratio of 4,4 -bis(4 -fluoro-3 -trifluoromethyl benzyl) biphenyl to 3,3 -disulfonate-4,4 -dichlorodiphenyl sulfone. Good thermal stability, oxidative stability, and mechanical properties at degrees of sulfonation of 0.2-0.6 were established. [Pg.196]

Ueda et al. focused their attention on a binaphthyl structure, which has a high hydrophobicity and a large free volume derived from its twisted structure, and was expected to show a low WU even after sulfonation. The monomer, 4,4 -di (l-naphthoxy)diphenyl sulfone, was successfully prepared by a nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction between 4,4 -dichlorodiphenyl sulfone and 1-naphthol. A highly SPES with highly hydrophobic binaphthyl units (lEC = 3.19 meq./g, BNSH-lOO(OX)) was obtained by the oxidative polymerization of 4,4 -di(l-naphthoxy) diphenyl sulfone with ferric chloride as an oxidant, followed by postsulfonation into the binaphthyl units (Scheme 4.15). [Pg.177]
