1.2- dicarbadodecaborane

A 250-mL, three-necked, round-bottomed flask is equipped with a nitrogen inlet and a condenser attached to a pressure-relief bubbler. The flask is flushed with nitrogen and potassium hydroxide (3.2 g, 57 moles) and anhydrous methanol (80 mL) are added. 1,2-Dicarbadodecaborane (1,2-C2B10H12) (4.7 g, 32.6 moles) is added and the mixture is stirred at room temperature until all the carborane dissolves (about 30 min). 

Two methods have been reported for the preparation of closo-1,2-dicarbadodecaborane(12) (or(/io-carborane). The first procedure involves the direct reaction of acetylene with a (Lewis base)2BioHi2 compound.
