Oxygen diatomic molecule

A molecule that is made up of two atoms is called a diatomic molecule. Oxygen also exists in another molecular form known as ozone. Molecules of ozone consist of three oxygen atoms, so its chemical formula is O3. Even though "normal" oxygen (O2) and ozone are both composed only of oxygen atoms, they exhibit very different chemical and physical properties. For example, O2 is essential for life, but O3 is toxic O2 is odorless, whereas O3 has a sharp, pimgent smell. [Pg.50]

Note that a pair of hydrogen atoms bonded together is a hydrogen molecule. Seven elements, when uncombined with other elements, form diatomic molecules. These elements are hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine. They are easy to remember because the last six form a large 7 in the periodic table ... [Pg.59]

Remember that oxygen occurs in diatomic molecules when it is uncombined. [Pg.118]

In writing these configurations for diatomic molecules of second-row elements, we have omitted the electrons from the Is orbitals because they are not part of the valence shells of the atoms. When considering the oxygen molecule, for which the a orbital arising from the combinations of the 2pz orbitals lies lower in energy than the 7r orbitals, we find that the electron configuration is... [Pg.79]

Consider the simple diatomic molecule CO with a carbon atom at one end of the bond and an oxygen atom at the other. The moment of inertia is a measure of how heavy each atom is and the length of the bond between them. The moment of inertia carries important information regarding the structure of the molecule and, more importantly, is very useful in identifying a molecule. The energy separation between the allowed end-over-end rotations of a diatomic, Ej, is given by ... [Pg.61]

In Volume 4 the decompositions of inorganic and metal organic compounds are discussed (except for homonuclear diatomic molecules, considered in a later section). Chapter 1 covers hydrides (and deuterides) of oxygen, sulphur, nitrogen, boron, etc, Chapter 2 deals with oxides, sulphides and derivatives, Chapter 3 with... [Pg.280]

The advantages of electron spectroscopy for the study of adsorbed diatomic molecules are illustrated by reference to the adsorption of carbon monoxide, nitrogen, nitric oxide, and oxygen on different metal surfaces. [Pg.65]
