Diaphragms deposited asbestos fibers

The NaOH concentration in the depositing bath must be held in the range of 120-160 gpl. The caustic reacts with the silica layers of the asbestos fibers. The fibers will swell and reduce the porosity of the diaphragm. The higher caustic concentration in the bath will degrade the asbestos fiber and form a silica gel in the bath. [Pg.297]
