Diamond heat of formation

Although there is a standard heat of formation for compounds, the standard heat of formation for elements in their ground state at 25°C and 1 atm is taken to be zero. For example, the standard state of H2, O2, CI2 or N2 is gaseous Fe, Na, I2, or Cr is solid and Br2, Hg, or Cs is liquid—zero (0) is the standard heat of formation for these substances.
