Diallyldiethylammonium bromide

In a search for new ion-exchange resins, Butler tried to prepare polymeric quaternary salts from various diallylamine derivatives. He reported (18) that a water-soluble polymer was obtained from the free radical-initiated polymerization of diallyldiethylammonium bromide [Eq. (II-3)]. Staudinger s hypothesis (150) predicts that an insoluble cross-linked polymer should have been obtained. This observation led Butler (18) to postulate an intra-inter-molecular polymerization path. The correctness of this structure was confirmed experimentally (26). [Pg.32]
