Di-n-propyl sulphide

Di-n-propyl sulphide [111-47-7] M 118.2, b 141-142 , d 0.870, n 1.449. Washed with aqueous 5% NaOH, then water. Dried with CaCh and distd from sodium [Dunstan and Griffiths JCS 1344 1962]. 

Dialkyl sulphides, and diphenyl sulphide Rotation of one C—Me bond 10° above and the other 10° below the C—S—C plane gives an equivalent conformation for Et3S agreeing with experiment a conformation for di-n-propyl sulphide can be analogously specified. In PI12S each C11H5 is rotated about its S—C bond by ca. 42° from the flat form Aroney et al., 1963b... 

Di-n-hexyl sulphide. Use 83 g. (71 ml.) of n-hexyl bromide (Section III.37), 56 g. of finely-powdered, anhydrous sodium sulphide and 100 ml. of rectified spirit. Reflux on a water bath for 20 hours. Distil ofiF the alcohol from a water bath very Uttle sulphide is obtained upon adding excess of water to the distiUate. Add excess of water to the residue in the flask and separate the upper layer of crude n-hexyl sulphide. Purify as for n-propyl sulphide, but distil under reduced pressure. CoUectthe n-hexyl sulphide at 113-114°/4 mm. The yield is 45 g.
