Determination of surface deflection

The maximum surface deflection in the case of a two-layer system, A2 i, can also be determined using Burmister s analysis. The surface deflection, A2 i, is calculated using the following equation  

When the loading medium is a rigid plate, a coefficient of 1.18 is used instead of the coefficient 1.5 in the above equation. 

The above inconvenience can be overcome by using Odemark s equivalent thickness theory, which converts the two-layer system into a one-layer system, and then applying Boussinesq s analysis.
