Destruction of Lead Azide

Lead azide is completely decomposed by the action of dilute nitric or acetic acid in which sodium nitrite has been dissolved, and the products pass to the solution. This reaction may be used for the destruction of lead azide wastes and residues, using 15% nitric acid and 8% sodium nitrite. [Pg.171]

The destruction of lead azide by electrolysis in hot 20% NaOH has also been studied [24]. The advantage of this method is that the lead metal is deposited on the cathode and may be recovered directly. The disadvantage is that hydrogen and oxygen are generated. [Pg.81]

Chemical destruction by oxidation-reduction methods in aqueous media is well documented [32]. Destruction of small quantities of lead azide with ceric ammonium nitrate is fast but expensive. The electrolytic oxidation of cerous ammonium nitrate can be done without sophisticated apparatus, and it may be pos-... [Pg.83]

The reaction is pH dependent with a half-life of 10 sec at a pH of 0-1, after solution of lead azide. The reaction rate is not diffusion controlled, even though a solid-liquid reaction is involved. Substitution of acetic acid for nitric acid is not advised because the solution becomes buffered, and the destruction ofhydrazoic acid slows. This results in boil-off ofhydrazoic acid. [Pg.84]

The preferred chemical method for destroying lead azide is to use a 20 to 25 percent aqueous solution of ceric ammonium nitrate. When small quantities of lead azide are destroyed in this manner the reaction is not violent. Since one of the products of the reaction is a gas, the ending of the gas evolution indicates completion of destruction. [Pg.303]

Amm acetate soln and add sufficient Na bichromate soln to ppt all lead as chromate. Test for the completion of destruction by transferring a portion of slurry to a filter paper and treating the filtrate with a few drops of Na bichromate soln. Confirm the absence of LA by washing.with distd w,the residue on filter, free of so azide salts, drying it,and subjecting a 20 mg portion to the impact test, using 2 kg wt. The material should not detonate... [Pg.575]
