Density matrix renormalization group theory

In modest sized systems, we can treat the nondynamic correlation in an active space. For systems with up to 14 orbitals, the complete-active-space self-consistent field (CASSCF) theory provides a very satisfactory description [2, 3]. More recently, the ab initio density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) theory has allowed us to obtain a balanced description of nondynamic correlation for up to 40 active orbitals and more [4-13]. CASSCF and DMRG potential energy... [Pg.344]

The Hubbard model, which has played a significant part in the earlier development of nonlinear optical response theory of molecules, has been revived by Shehadi et al.203 to explain the properties of small bridged metallic polymers. The Hubbard-Peierls hamiltonian has also been used by Shuai et al.,204 in conjunction with a symmetry adapted density matrix renormalization group formulation, to calculate a number of properties, including third harmonic generation in trans-octatetraene. [Pg.25]

It is instructive to compare the approximate weak-coupling theory to essential exact, numerical (density matrix renormalization group) calculations on the same model (namely the Pariser-Parr-Pople model). The numerical calculations are performed on polymer chains with the polyacetylene geometry. Since these chains posses inversion symmetry the many-body eigenstates are either even (Ag) or odd By). As discussed previously, the singlet exciton wave function has either even or odd parity when the particle-hole eigenvalue is odd or even. Conversely, the triplet exciton wavefunction has either even or odd parity when the particle-hole eigenvalue is even or odd. As a consequence, we can express a B state as... [Pg.79]

To summarize, we have presented a review on the renormalization group theory in the reduced many-body density matrix basis (DMRG method), and we have applied it to conjugated organic systems, with both short range and long range Coulomb interaction potentials. We... [Pg.201]
