Degree of s orbital character

A lone pair of electrons orbits only one nucleus. The nucleus carries a positive charge, while the lone pair is a negative charge that is separated from the nucleus. Would the degree of stabilisation of the electrons within the lone pair increase or decrease as the average distance between the lone-pair electrons and the nucleus increases  [Pg.92]

As the charge separation increases, the stabilisation would decrease, because the Coulombic interaction decreases. [Pg.92]

For any given quantum level, is the s sub-orbital closer to the nucleus than the p sub-orbitals  [Pg.92]

The s sub-orbital is closer to the nucleus. Thus, place the following hybrid orbitals, sp3, sp and sp, in order of increasing average distance from the nucleus. [Pg.93]

With increasing p sub-orbital content, the hybrid atomic orbital becomes increasingly distant from the nucleus. Accordingly, suggest the order of increasing stability for a lone pair in these hybrid orbitals. [Pg.93]
