The third special case of thiyl radicals is represented by aromatic thiyl radicals. The ground electronic state of these radicals is not degenerate due to conjugation of the sulfur 3pj orbital with the benzene n system. Like phenoxyis, aromatic thiyl radicals are easily detectable by ESR either in liquids or solids. In the latter case they still display a significant g anisotropy, (g = 2.07, j =2.00) [46, 47] which, however, is much smaller than in the case of aliphatic thiyls and does not appear to be matrix dependent. [Pg.230]
