Deduction of a mechanism from experimental data

The procedures involved here are the reverse of those in Problem 6.6 above, but the reasoning is similar. [Pg.211]

Question. The gas phase decomposition of ethanal occurs according to CH3CHO(g) - CH4(g) + CO(g) [Pg.211]

The major products are CH4 and CO, with C2H6, CH3COCOCH3 and CH3COCH3 being minor products. The radicals CH, CH3CO and CHO are present. Deduce a mechanism which fits these facts. [Pg.211]

CH + CH - C2H6 CH + CH3CO - CH3COCH3 CH3CO + CH3CO CH3COCOCH3 [Pg.212]

The last two minor products confirm that H abstraction occurs on the CHO group of CH3CHO. [Pg.212]
