The direct actions of DA on pituitary hormone secretion are largely inhibitory, maintaining basal secretion of prolactin from anterior pituitary lactotrophs and POMC-derived peptide hormones from intermediate lobe melanotrophs via inhibitory D2 receptors located on these cells.
