D-Monosaccharides

The designations D and L refer to the configuration of the stereocenter farthest from the aldehyde or ketone group on a monosaccharide chain. When the monosaccharide chain is drawn as a Fischer projection, a D-monosaccharide has the -OH on this carbon on the right an L monosaccharide has it on the left. 

The p anomer of a d monosaccharide has the OH group drawn up, cis to the CH2OH group at 05. The P anomer is called p-D-glucose, or p-D-glucopyranose (to emphasize the six-membered ring). 

P Anomer (Section 27.6) The stereoisomer of a cyclic monosaccharide in which the anomerie OH and the CH2OH groups are eis. In a D monosaccharide, the hydroxy group on the anomeric carbon is drawn up. 

D) monosaccharides are transported to adipose tissue via the lymphatic system. 

Monosaccharides contain at least one asymmetric C atom and are therefore capable of existing in D and L optically active forms (Chapter 13.2). In Table 10.2, the complete scheme of D-monosaccharides is shown, in shortened notation, for up to 6 C atoms. 

For a D-monosaccharide, the terminal —CH2OH points up in the Haworth projection. 

D-monosaccharide one that has the same configuration at its penultimate carbon as L-glyceraldehyde is called an L-monosaccharide.

D-Monosaccharide A monosaccharide that, when written as a Fischer projection, has the —OH on its penultimate carbon to the right.

Draw Fischer projections for the four aldotetroses. Which are D-monosaccharides, which are L-monosaccharides, and which are enantiomers Refer to Table 25.1 and write the name of each aldotetrose. 

A monosaccharide that has the same configuration about its penultimate carbon as D-glyceraldehyde is classified as a D-monosaccharide. In this case, the —OH group is on the right side of the carbon atom in the Fischer projection.
