A number of other receptors structurally relating to 36 were described that possess overall similar binding properties although some characteristic differences were noted. Thus, the compound HEXAPUS, a cyclotriveratrylene derivative (Menger et al., 1981) has many properties remarkably similar to fulvic acid and humic acid. In particular, it has the ability to chelate metals and entrap nonpolar substances in aqueous solution. However, it has 70% carbon, which rules it out as a natural humic acid.

UV-visible spectrophotometry and electrochemistry, regarding their coordination to transition metals and the properties of the corresponding complexes are under progress, as well as the extension of the synthetic method described above to the preorganization of other binding groups around the cyclotriveratrylene.
