Cyclic isomerization

The surface complex shown in Scheme V may be identical with the common C intermediate of C5 cyclization and C5 cyclic isomerization 15a). Its degree of dissociation may not be too high (57), and the bond between it and the metal may have some sort of fluxional character. 

Two main pathways of metal-catalyzed skeletal rearrangement have been distinguished bond shift mechanism and C5 cyclic isomerization (7, 8). 

Pines and Csicsery (90, 90a) proposed three and/or four-membered cyclic intermediates in the isomerization of various branched alkanes over non-acidic chromia-alumina. A similar, 1,3-methyl shift has recently been reported with an oxygenated reactant (tetramethyloxetane) over supported Pt, Pd, and Rh (90b). Future experiments are necessary to elucidate whether hydrocarbons, too, can form C4 cyclic intermediates over metal catalysts. Some products assumedly formed via ethyl shift could be interpreted by C4 cyclic isomerization. 

Denson (Ref 9) on those a-azidoalkylidenimines which undergo cyclic isomerizations to tet-razoles and Boyer Canter (Ref 15) made a thorough survey of the available information on alkyl and aryl azides. Cirulis Straumanis (Ref 6) prepd a number of new azides of org bases bur none of these azides showed eiqjl props. Schaad (Ref 14) obtd a patent for the manuf of esters of hydrazoic acid based on the reaction of alkenes, cyclic olefins, ary 1-alkenes cycloalkylalkenes with HN3 in the presence of an acid catalyst... 

Since reactivity of alkenes increases with increasing alkyl substitution, hydration is best applied in the synthesis of tertiary alcohols. Of the isomeric alkenes, cis compounds are usually more reactive than the corresponding trans isomers, but strained cyclic isomeric olefins may exhibit opposite behavior. Thus, for example, frans-cyclooctene is hydrated 2500 times faster than cw-cyclooctene.6 Similar large reactivity differences were observed in the addition of alcohols to strained trans cycloalkenes compared with the cis isomers. frans-Cycloheptene, an extremely unstable compound, for instance, reacts with methanol 109 faster at —78°C than does the cis compound.7...
