Cyano-, ethyl ester 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl

In an extension of these studies (55JA3844), the synthesis of 5,6-dimethoxyindole-3-propionic acid was achieved by reductive cyclization of 3-cyano-3-(2-nitro-4,5-dimethoxyphenyl) propanoate esters with H2 over 10% Pd/C in ethyl acetate. This approach was later revisited for the preparation of ethyl 2-(5,6-dimethoxyindol-3-yl)acetate 14 (80SYN663) (Scheme 3).
