Reaction with cyanates

The cyanation reactions with (19) (extremely toxic and requires essentially nonacidic reaction conditions) can also he carried out with unprotected aldehydes in good yields but with higher charge consumption (88-97%, 0.15-0.45 F). For ketones, the products are isolated as trimethylsilyl ethers, whereas for aldehydes the sdyl ethers are hydrolyzed to alcohols [33].

TMSCN is not the only reagent useful for the formation of cyanoglycosides. Complimentary and, perhaps, equally important is the use of aluminum reagents. As applied to pyranose sugars, Grierson, et a/.,10 demonstrated that the stereochemical outcome of the cyanation reaction with diethylaluminum cyanide was temperature dependent. Thus, as shown in Scheme 2.2.11, at room temperature, a mixture of a and p isomers were formed while, at reflux, the predominant isomer possessed the a configuration.
