It also proved possible to attach aza-crown ethers to the periphery of a POPAM dendrimer via amidoferrocenyl units (Fig. 4.5) [9a] and also to decorate the outer shell of a second-generation POPAM dendrimer alternately with eight F-stilbene and eight 4-tert-bulylbenzenesulphonic acid units [9b]. Carbosilane dendrimers functionalised eight-fold with crown ethers (Fig. 4.45) can accommodate a total of eight potassium ions in their peripheral crown ether units [86]. 

Supramolecules containing metal-polypyridine units, especially the Ru(dpp)-based dendrimers, could be used as electron reservoirs or components of molecular-electronic devices. Supramolecules in which an electroactive M(N,N) group is attached to a receptor capable of molecular recognition (crown ethers, calixarenes, cryptands etc.) can work as electrochemical sensors. Electrochemical recognition of cations as well as anions has been reported [33-35, 257, 263]. 

Dendrimers with up to 96 redox-active TTF moieties on the periphery, which allow the generation of polycationic species bearing up to 192 positive charges on the surface, were incorporated into electrodes. These dendrimer-modified electrodes find application in electrochemical sensing of metal cations (i.e., Ba ), thanks to the grafting of crown ether/TTF units on the periphery of dendrimers < 2001AGE224>. 

The synthesis of a dendrimer with a complexing inner core (hexacyclene = hexa-aza[18]crown-6) succeeded in Bonn hexacyclene was linked with a branching unit which was obtained in a convergent manner. [31]...
