Crematogaster castanea

R) and (S)-3-octanol, (i )-2-dodecanol, (i )-2-methyl-4-heptanol and (i )-2-methyl-4-octanol, the pheromones of Myrmica scabrinodis, Crematogaster castanea, C. liengmei, C. auberti and Metamasius hemipterus were synthesized starting from nonracemic P-hydroxy sulfides. 

The variation in the ratio of the two major alarm pheromone components in individuals of Crematogaster castanea and C. liengmei was examined by Brand and Pretorius 432 who suggested that these two semiochemicals (3-octanone and 3-octanol) may have roles in species or nestmate recognition.
