Creative strategy

The U.S. Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 established a national policy to prevent or reduce pollution at its source whenever feasible. It also provided an opportunity to devise creative strategies for the protection of human health and the environment, and to formulate innovative approaches to the challenge of constructing a sustainable planet. In the sections below we will review the new concepts and tools that are relevant for Pollution Prevention. 

The present volume is intended to provide this knowledge, showing synthetic principles and creative strategies for the above-mentioned classes of macrocycles with stress on crowns, strained and cavityshaped cyclophanes, expanded porphyrins and macrolide antibiotics.

The Tamao-Kumada and Fleming oxidations have found wide synthetic utility in the oxidation of a variety of silyl groups.6,26 29 However, the true virtue of these reactions lies in the manner in which the silyl group is introduced into the molecule to be oxidized. A number of creative strategies have been developed for this process, some of which will be highlighted below. 

Both yield and enantiomeric excess (ee) are quite low (20—37% yield and 19—47% ee), but this approach is stiU conceptually very interesting because it represents a creative strategy for making a thiophene unit in an enantioselec-tive manner. However, the role of sparteine is not yet clear in fact, the enantioselectivity can in principle result from the kinetic resolution during the double asymmetric deprotonation or in the subsequent ring closure reaction. 

New environmental problems require new solutions and new creative strategies in collaboration with citizens and responsible politicians. This objective can be reached only if it becomes a common one, moving the politics of development to- wards an actual integration of ecological and socio-economic needs.
