Crack propagation speed

The most recent model of de Gennes and coworkers [100,101], the threshold toughness is related to the extra surface and elastic energy of the individual chains as they are pulled out. The threshold toughness and the critical crack propagation speed are given by... 

For AK = 0.7 MPa. s/m (Fig. 23b), after the injection of IPA crack propagation speeds up twice at point B and point D. In between, the increase in a IW is negligibly small. The stable crack propagation after point E is again slower than in air. Failure occurs at about 4 x 105 cycles. 

Debonding between well-bonded APTFS-Al O nanoparticles and epoxy matrix depends on the crack propagation speed. It is observed only in the mirror zone. However, in the nanocomposites having poorly bonded NT- AljOj particles, particle debonding is noticed everywhere. 

Bond s Law. A theory of grinding which postulates that the grinding rate of a solid is proportional to the crack propagation speed in the solid. (F.C.Bond, Trans. Amer. Inst. Min. (metall) Engrs. 193,1952, p484). 

When the load has reached a critical plateau value, the crack continues to propagate at constant load. Crack propagation can be stopped by removing the load, with the implication that several readings can be made on one test specimen. Crack velocity is determined by the crosshead speed, modulus of the material and specimen dimensions.
