Table 2 includes the capital cities of the four countries comprising the UK Belfast (Northern Ireland), Cardiff (Wales), Edinburgh (Scotland) and London (England). Because of the small sample size in some areas, generalisations from Table 2 may not be valid. [Pg.113]

The global demand for food stimulated increased fertilizer usage and consequently increased phosphate rock consumption through 1990. Over the last decade, rock production has been somewhat flat. Although production capacity has declined in the United States, new mine capacity has been added elsewhere. From Table 23.3 it is evident that significant increased phosphate rock production capability has been added in Morocco, China, Tunisia, Jordan, and the countries comprising Other. [Pg.1093]

The expenditures for health care in the United States have grown from 51 billion in 1967 (6.3% of GNP) to over 1 trillion in 1997 (14% of 00 ).= In 1997, on a per capita basis, 4090 was spent on health care and 0.64 per day/capita was spent on prescription drugs.f This is substantially higher than that of other industrialized nations. When comparing health expenditures in the major industrialized countries comprising the Organization for Economic Cooperation... [Pg.1989]

Individual portions of donated blood should be tested for infectious risk whenever possible. The series of assays currently performed in most countries comprises tests for antibodies against HIV-I/-II, HCV, and HTLV-I/II, HBsAg, and a test for syphilis. However, screening for syphilis is no longer mandatory in all countries, as cost-benefit analysis has shown it to be of little value, at least with voluntary non-remunerated donors. [Pg.530]

The legislation of some European countries comprises positive lists for artificial flavouring substances, such as ethyl vanillin. [Pg.159]

The survey of rainfall acidity has been carried out at seven sites in the north of the country comprising three in-land sites, three coastal sites, and one background site (Khahn, 1993 Radojevic, 1998). This survey yielded the following results ... [Pg.81]

For Latin American countries comprising Amazonian areas, development of their vast wilderness regions has become a national priority. The family Compositae has been widely used as medicinal plants in Latin American and their antiparasitic properties are well known. Reports on the protozoocidal activity of the genus Baccharis, a member of the Compositae, are recorded in the literature. Rojas de Arias et al. [97] investigated the trypanocidal effect of crude extracts of some Paraguayan Compositae on the bloodstream forms of... [Pg.741]

Chlorine cannot be stored economically or moved long distances. International movements of bulk chlorine are more or less limited to movements between Canada and the United States. In 1987, chlorine moved in the form of derivatives was 3.3 million metric tons or approximately 10% of total consumption (3). Exports of ethylene dichloride, vinyl chloride monomer, poly(vinyl chloride), propylene oxide, and chlorinated solvents comprise the majority of world chlorine movement. Countries or areas with a chlorine surplus exported in the form of derivatives include Western Europe, Bra2il, USA, Saudi Arabia, and Canada. Countries with a chlorine deficit are Taiwan, Korea, Indonesia, Vene2uela, South Africa, Thailand and Japan (3). [Pg.478]

The sodium formate process is comprised of six steps (/) the manufacture of sodium formate from carbon monoxide and sodium hydroxide, (2) manufacture of sodium oxalate by thermal dehydrogenation of sodium formate at 360°C, (J) manufacture of calcium oxalate (slurry), (4) recovery of sodium hydroxide, (5) decomposition of calcium oxalate where gypsum is produced as a by-product, and (6) purification of cmde oxahc acid. This process is no longer economical in the leading industrial countries. UBE Industries (Japan), for instance, once employed this process, but has been operating the newest diaLkyl oxalate process since 1978. The sodium formate process is, however, still used in China. [Pg.457]

Pyrite is the most abundant of the metal sulfides. Eor many years, until the Erasch process was developed, pyrite was the main source of sulfur and, for much of the first half of the twentieth century, comprised over 50% of world sulfur production. Pyrite reserves are distributed throughout the world and known deposits have been mined in about 30 countries. Possibly the largest pyrite reserves in the world are located in southern Spain, Portugal, and the CIS. Large deposits are also in Canada, Cypms, Einland, Italy, Japan, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, Turkey, the United States, and Yugoslavia. However, the three main regional producers of pyrites continue to be Western Europe Eastern Europe, including the CIS and China. [Pg.119]

The brick industry in the United States is comprised of approximately 120 companies that operate 236 plants across the country. Thek sales in 1989 were 1.2 bHHon, with 64% in residential constmction, 31% in commercial constmction, and 5% for nonhuilding usage. Brick was used on 31% of new commercial huil dings and 17% of new homes buHt. [Pg.324]

The world s largest cobalt reserves are iu Zaire, Zambia, Morocco, Canada, and AustraUa. Together the ores of these countries contain well over one-half of the world cobalt supply. The richest deposits are iu Zaire and Zambia. The reserves of Canada and AustraUa comprise approximately one-fourth of the world supply. Smaller but commercially practical ore bodies also exist iu Russia, Einland, Uganda, and the Philippines. [Pg.369]

Comprised of 27 Constituent Societies (23 in the US., two in Canada, and one each in Mexico and the United Kingdom), the international membership also includes affiliated members from over 45 countries. Members represent the diverse segments involved in coatings —from formulation and testing to manufacture and sales. [Pg.271]

The tenth volume of this serial publication comprises six chapters, four of which deal with the general chemistry of a specific group of heterocyclic compounds pyridopyrimidines (W. J. Irwin and D. G. VVibberley), benzofuroxans (A. J. Boulton and P. B. Ghosh), isoindoles (J. D. White and M. E. Mann), and pyrylium salts (A. T. Balaban, W. Schroth, and G. Fischer). The remaining chapters are concerned with indole Grignard reagents (R. A. Heacock and S. Kasparek) and with cyclic hydroxamic acids (J. B. Bapat, D. St. C. Black, and R. C. Brown). The international flavor of the publication is preserved our contributors come from six countries in three continents. [Pg.355]
