For the alkali metal doped Cgo compounds, charge transfer of one electron per M atom to the Cgo molecule occurs, resulting in M+ ions at the tetrahedral and/or octahedral symmetry interstices of the cubic Cgo host structure. For the composition MaCgg, the resulting metallic crystal has basically the fee structure (see Fig. 2). Within this structure the alkali metal ions can sit on either tetragonal symmetry (1/4,1/4,1/4) sites, which are twice as numerous as the octahedral (l/2,0,0) sites (referenced to a simple cubic coordinate system). The electron-poor alkali metal ions tend to lie adjacent to a C=C double... [Pg.44]

An example of surfaces with tetragonal symmetry is the Cu(OOl) surface, as shown in Fig. 5.3. The top-layer nuclei form a two-dimensional square lattice on the x,y plane with lattice constant a. The origin of the coordinate system is chosen to be at one of the top-layer nuclei. The +z direction is defined as pointing into the vacuum. Orthorhombic crystals are similar to both tetragonal and cubic crystals because their coordinate axes are still orthogonal, but now all the lattice parameters are unequal. There are four types of orthorhombic space lattices simple orthorhombic, face-centered orthorhombic, body-centered orthorhombic, and a type we have not yet encountered, base-centered orthorhombic. The first three types are similar to those we have seen for the cubic and tetragonal systems. The base-centered orthorhombic space lattice has a lattice point (atom) at each comer, as well as a lattice point only on the top and bottom faces (called basal faces).
