Conventions Adopted In Diagrams and Discussions

Certain conventions were adopted in the diagrams and discussions in this chapter. These are 

For convenience only, the diagrams in this chapter depict manipulation of condensation rate by varying coolant flow rate. Alternative techniques for manipulating condensation rate are described in Chap. 17. The discussions in the present chapter generally apply regardless of the manipulative technique. 

The discussions and diagrams in this chapter exclude manipulation of column feed. This manipulation seldom belongs to the column control system. Feed is usually manipulated as part of an upstream control system (e.g., to regulate bottom level of an upstream column), or is maintained constant by a flow controller. One exception 

For simplicity, the discussions and diagrams assume that the column produces a bottom product, a top product, and no side product. The concepts discussed are extended to columns with side products in Chap. 19.
