In contrast to the relatively complex postnatal maturation of the ventilatory responses to hypoxia and given the similarity of the fetal response to hypercapnia to that of the adult, namely a sustained increase in breathing movements (6), as well as the linearity of the CO2 stimulus response curve, the postnatal maturation of responses to hypercapnia might appear, initially, a more straightforward process.
