Computer-assisted learning or CAL (also called computer-assisted instruction or CAI) has been around quite a long time now, but the advent of the inexpensive microcomputer in the past 10 years has given great impetus to the use of such machines in education, both in teaching and in management... 

Educational research has shown that there is very little transfer of what is learned, from one subject to another unless a specific effort is made to teach this. An instructor has little time to engage in such efforts. A computer has as much time as is needed. This is why people invented Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI).
