Components in a Self-Organizing Map

The SOM has a particularly simple structure only three components are needed  

A number of nodes arranged in a regular lattice each node stores a set of weights  

A rule to identify the node whose weights most closely resemble a pattern drawn at random from the sample database. 

An algorithm to adjust node weights to improve the ability of the network to classify samples.
