Though the type of processing required is largely dependent upon fluid composition at the wellhead, the equipment employed is significantly influenced by location whether for example the facilities are based on land or offshore, in tropical or arctic environments. Sometimes conditions are such that a process which is difficult or expensive to perform offshore can be exported to the coast and handled much more easily on land. 

The onus for the organisation of any inspection programme beyond that required by Class rests with the owner or operator of the ship. Under certain circumstances, for example, when the propagation of cracks could lead to pollution through the loss of cargo, an owner of an oil tanker operating in US coasted waters may spend a considerable amount of money on preventative inspections.

Still another possibiUty is a marine biomass plantation such as that envisaged for giant brown kelp grown off the California coast and conversion of the kelp to methane in a system similar to that shown in Figure 19. The dominant role of petroleum in the chemical industry worldwide is reflected in the landscapes of, for example, the Ruhr Valley in Germany and the U.S. Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast, where petrochemical plants coimected by extensive and complex pipeline systems dot the countryside. Any movement to a different feedstock would require replacement not only of the chemical plants themselves, but of the expensive infrastmcture which has been built over the last half of the twentieth century. Moreover, because petroleum is a Hquid which can easily be pumped, change to any of the soHd potential feedstocks (like coal and biomass) would require drastic changes in feedstock handling systems.

The above-mentioned codes contain requirements for accelerated durabiUty tests. In addition, interlayer manufacturers and laminators expose test samples for several years under extreme weather conditions, eg, the Florida coast and Arizona desert. The laminated products weather extremely well, with no change in the plastic interlayer. Occasionally, clouding is noted around the edges when exposed to high humidity for long periods, but this is reversible. Colored areas of PVB laminates may fade while subjected to extensive uv/solar irradiation, which could cause an appearance issue. This has not, however, been shown to alter the laminate s other performance properties.
