Atlantic Richfield Company, Arco has developed several conventional technologies for sulfur removal from coal and ashes and for manufacturing oil-coal mixed fuels, prior to becoming involved in BDS. Their patent entitled, Biodesulfurization of carbonaceous materials [16] was developed for the coal application, but nevertheless was extrapolated for application to petroleum desulfurization as well. 

Suspension Polymerization. The suspension or pearl polymerization process has been used to prepare polymers for adhesive and coaling applications and for conversion to poly(vinyl alcohol). Suspension polymerization are carried out with monomer-soiubie initiators predominantly, with low levels of stabilizers Continuous tubular polymerization of vinyl acetate in suspension yields stable dispersions of beads with narrow particle size distributions at high yields. 

Mass-transfer for high sulfur coal applications is liquid phase resistant the contact time and high surface exposure allowed in a packed tower reduces this adverse condition. 

In high-sulfur coal applications, 90 percent SO2 removal can be attained with a total process energy of 1.3 percent of the plant power production.

Most common rubber processes are also used with fluoroelastomers. Compression molding is still the preferred way for small production quantities. However, compression transfer, injection transfer, and injection molding are now commonly used. Huoroelastomers can be extruded, calendered, and dissolved for mastic and coaling applications.
