ATP + dephospho-[[hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase (NADPH)] kinase] = ADP + [ [hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase (NADPH)] kinase] (phosphorylates and activates EC 2.7.1.109 [hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase (NADPH)]kinase that has been inactivated by EC 3.1.3.16 phospho-protein phosphatase.)... 

This enzyme [EC 2.7.1.109], also known simply as reductase kinase, catalyzes the reaction of ATP with the enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (NADPH) producing ADP and the phosphorylated form of the reductase. This phosphorylation inactivates the reductase. Histones can substitute for the reductase as substrates. 

NADPH is the electron donor in a reaction catalyzed by hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase, followed by two phosphorylation reactions involving ATP and two specific kinases, and an ATP-dependent decarboxylation. The process is summarized in Example 13.15 and Fig. 13-21.
