Cluster compounds carbaboranes

The carbaalanes [8, 9] possess clusters formed by aluminum and carbon atoms. They represent a new class of compounds which, in some respects, may be compared to the important class of carbaboranes. Usually, they were obtained by the reaction of aluminum alkynides with aluminum hydrides (hydroalumination) and the release of trialkylaluminum derivatives (condensation). The first carbaalane, (AlMe)g(CCH2Ph)5H 3 [10], was synthesized by the treatment of dimethylalumi-num phenylethynide with neat dimethylaluminum hydride. The idealized stoichiometric ratio of the components is given in Eq. (2), which also shows a schematic drawing of the molecular structure. Compound 3 was isolated in the form of colorless crystals in 60% yield. While 3 is only slightly air-sensitive, the less sterically shielded propynide derivative 4, also shown in Eq. (2), is highly pyrophoric [11],... [Pg.359]

Wade electron counting rules borane-like cluster nomenclature. On initially studying compounds such as boranes (boron hydrides) and carboranes (or carbaboranes boron—carbon hydrides), Wade (1976) proposed a number of rules which have then been extended to several compounds and which relate the number of skeletal electrons with the structure of deltahedral clusters. A polyhedron which has only A-shaped, that is triangular, faces is also called a deltahedron. [Pg.275]

Metallacarbaboranes (or metallacarboranes) are compounds that contain cluster polyhedra comprising carbon, boron, and metal atoms in various combinations. The first metallacarbaborane clusters were prepared by Hawthorne in 1965, and were derived from the icosahedral closo-carbaborane l,2-C2BioHi2 see Boron Polyhedral Carbo-ranes) by the replacement of one BH vertex with a metal center. Compounds such as [Fe(C2B9Hn)2]" (n = 1 or 2) can be represented as the commo-metallacarbaborane (1) or as... [Pg.443]
