Clumping of particles

Viscosity. Because a clump of particles contains occluded Hquid, the effective volume fraction of a suspension of clumps is larger than the volume fraction of the individual particles that is, there is less free Hquid available to faciHtate the flow than if the clumps were deagglomerated. The viscosity of a suspension containing clumps decreases as the system becomes deagglomerated. This method is not very sensitive in the final stages of deagglomeration when there are only a few small clumps left. [Pg.548]

Initial studies were made with the Rank Bros, electrophoresis unit, using the dilute supernatant suspension over a dispersion of 3.33g of carbon black per liter of dodecane equilibrated for 24 hours with the added 0L0A-1200. Macroscopically, a liquid has a definite volume but no definite shape. It conforms to the shape of its container. Microscopically, the particles are moving much more than in the solid. There are usually clumps of particles moving relatively freely among other clumps. [Pg.3]

At the microscopic level, the liquid particles are in constant motion. The particles may exhibit short-range areas of order, but these usually do not last very long. Clumps of particles may form and then break apart. At the macroscopic level, a liquid has a specific volume but no fixed shape. Clumps of particle may contain occluded air that is difficult to displace this is best dealt with by adding the liquid whilst the powder is under vacuum. [Pg.343]
