Figure 2.3. There are several ways to graphically summarize the size and shape information from Image analysis of an array of fineparticles. a) Classical size distribution histogram for the powder of Figure 2.1(c). b) Chunkiness distribution for the powder of Figure 2.1(c). c) The Chunkiness-Size domain for the powder of Figure 2.1 (c) clearly demonstrates the difference in the range of shape for the fines as compared to the coarse fraction of the powder. This information is lost in a plot such as that of (b). Figure 2.3. Figure 2.7. When characterizing powders there are several methods of displaying size distribution data [15, 16]. a) Micrograph of typical grains of coarse iron powder. (Metal powders supplied by D. Alliet of Xerox Corp.) b) Size distribution obtained from by image analysis for the coarse iron powder of (a) displayed as a histogram, c) Size distribution of (b) plotted on log-Gaussian graph paper, d) Chunkiness-Size domain for the powder of (a). Note that in the Chunkiness-Size domain of Figure 2.8(d) that the range of size is much smaller than for the powder of Figure 2.7 which was produced by sieve fractionation reaffirming it it s Gaussian distribution. Note also that the shape range is closer to spherical, as expected for a spray dried powder [15]. [Pg.31]
