Chromatographic Characteristics of Monolithic Columns

Monolithic stationary phases have to be regarded as the first substantial further development of HPLC columns, as they present a single particle separation medium, made up of porous polymer. As a consequence of their macroporous structure, they feature a number of advantages over microparticulate columns in terms of separation characteristics, hydrodynamic properties, as well as their fabrication  

Even if the diminishment of interparticnlate voids as well as the convective mass transfer are generally assnmed to be the main reasons for the enhanced chromatographic properties of monolithic colnmns, the characteristics of organic and inorganic monolithic snpports have to be separately discnssed and evalnated, since they have been shown to complement one another regarding their applicability [29,100].
