Chondropsin

From the sponge Chondropsis sp., collected at Bass Island, Australia, two strac-turally novel macrolides, chondropsins A (61) and B (62), were isolated by antiproliferative bioassay-guided fractionation. These compounds (61 and 62) were polyunsaturated, polyhydroxylated, 35-membered macrocycles incorporating both... 

Discovered in 2000 in an undetermined species of the genus Chondropsis harvested in Australia (Bass Island), chondropsins A, B and D are potent inhibitors of cell growth for the NCI-60 cell lines, but with the characteristic of showing no analogy with existing models. They may therefore act through a new mechanism that could make these macro-lides a new generation of anticancer substances. 

Two Other chondropsins were isolated in 2001, but from a sponge of the genus Ircinia, which belongs to the order Dictyoceratida (see below).
